Dignity in Every Dose: Advocating for Thoughtful Deprescribing in Older Adults with Intellectual and Development Disabilities (IDD)

Objectives for Pharmacists            

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

• Identify common medication-related risks in older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
• Describe person-centered deprescribing principles that support autonomy, dignity, and individualized care in the IDD population.
• Apply evidence-based strategies and tools to evaluate and reduce potentially inappropriate medications in older adults with IDD.

Objectives for Pharmacy Technicians      

At the completion of this activity, the participant will be able to:

• Identify common medication-related risks in older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
• Describe person-centered deprescribing principles that support autonomy, dignity, and individualized care in the IDD population.
• List evidence-based strategies and tools to evaluate and reduce potentially inappropriate medications in older adults with IDD.

Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider for continuing pharmacy education and has assigned 1 contact hour (0.1 CEU) of continuing pharmacy education credits for participating in this activity.  Participants of the session who complete the evaluation and provide accurate NABP e-Profile information will have their credit submitted to CPE Monitor as early as 1 day after the event and no later than 60 days after the event.  Please know that if accurate e-Profile information is not provided within 60 days of the event, credit cannot be claimed after that time.  The participant is accountable for verifying the accurate posting of CE credit to their CPE Monitor account within 60 days. Participants must participate in the activity and complete the course evaluation in its entirety to claim continuing pharmacy education credit.

Mission Impossible: Overcoming New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase Infections

•           Describe the epidemiology and risk factors for New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM) infections

•           Design an appropriate antimicrobial regimen to treat a carbapenem-resistant enterobacterales (CRE) bacteremia when a metallo-β-lactamase is present

•           Analyze current literature describing the efficacy of new agents for treating CRE infections when NDM is present

2025 Spring Seminar Abstract and Poster Submission

VSHP is hosting a Poster Competition at VSHP Spring Seminar 2025!

Accepted posters will be displayed at the VSHP 2025 Spring Seminar on April 3-5, 2025 at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA

General Information:

• The primary author for each pharmacy resident, pharmacy student, and pharmacy technician poster submission will receive free registration for the 2025 VSHP Spring Seminar.
• All presenters must be registered for the 2025 VSHP Spring Seminar, at minimum for the day of the presentation
• Only one submission per member is permitted as primary author. A member may be a co-author for multiple abstract and poster submissions.
• Posters regarding all aspects of pharmacy including clinical, operational, leadership, education and training, and innovative practice topics (and more!) are encouraged! 

Award Information:

• Primary author for pharmacist poster category will be eligible to win a recognition certificate from the VSHP Educational Affairs Committee
• The primary author for one submission in the pharmacy resident, pharmacy student, and pharmacy technician poster categories will be eligible to win a $100 award and a recognition certificate from the VSHP Educational Affairs Committee
• One recognition certificate will be provided per category.
• One $100 award will be provided for the student, resident, and technician categories.

Key Dates:

• Monday, March 3rd, 2025: Due date for poster abstract only
• Monday, March 10th, 2025: Primary author will be notified by e-mail of submission acceptance/declination
• Friday, March 28th, 2025: Due date for accepted posters to email their poster (in PDF format) to contact@vshp.org 
• Saturday, April 5th, 2025: Author(s) present and available to discuss their posters at the VSHP Fall Seminar. Posters should remain displayed until the last day of the conference.
• The winning poster(s) will be alerted via direct email to the presenter and will be announced to the VSHP cohort in the VSHP newsletter and social media posts.

Presentations can be on a variety topics and are welcome to give presentations that you may have already presented in another venue. This is a great way to become more involved in VSHP and a great opportunity to share your work with colleagues around the state.

Pharmacy Legislative Day

We are excited to partner with the Virginia Pharmacy Association as a host of the annual Pharmacy Legislative Day on Wednesday, January 22, 2025! Because of this partnership, members of VSHP are invited to register for this event at the $25 member rate! Take note the event will be at a different location, if you attended last year. VPhA has moved the event to the VCU Biotech Center at 800 E Leigh Street, Richmond, VA 23298 to accommodate more attendees and shorten the walk to the GA Building.
