Title: Management of Acute Ischemic Stroke: Quality of Care and Outcomes

Objectives:
1) Review current treatment modalities deployed in the Emergency Department (ED) for acute ischemic stroke
2) Discuss existing quality measures for the emergency care of acute ischemic stroke
3) Explore novel treatments that are in the pipeline for stroke care
Course Summary:
A wealth of knowledge and experience in enhancing the quality of health care has accumulated over the past several years. Several organizations have developed stroke quality measures for use in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The purpose of this program is to review acute ischemic stroke care in the Emergency Department, while also discussing the various stroke performance measures. We will look into a correlation between compliance with performance measures and patient outcomes. Finally, we will introduce several new treatment modalities that are in the pipeline for acute ischemic stroke care.
Lisa Deal Short Biography:
Lisa Lowery Deal Pharm.D., BCPS, B.S.N., R.N. is currently an Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Specialist at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE. Lisa was previously a clinical specialist at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Lisa has been practicing in Emergency Medicine for over 13 years as both a nurse and pharmacist. Dr. Deal received degrees from Virginia Tech, Johns Hopkins University, and University of Maryland. She has also been actively involved in ASHP and VSHP for the past 11 years. She has completed a 3-year term at ASHP as the chair, vice-chair, and member of the Council on Education and Workforce Development and was fortunate to be a new practitioner member on the Public Policy Council. Lisa has been theVirginia Region III president for the past 5 years, member of the Virginia Houseof Delegates for VSHP for 2012-2014, and has been a VSHP Board Member-At-Large. Most recently, Lisa was installed as the VSHP President-Elect. Dr. Deal has published several articles related to emergency medicine and has presented at VSHP, VPhA, and ASHP meetings. Her areas of interest include: medication safety, resident and student teaching, and toxicology. It is her goal that Virginia and Delaware, like California, will recognize pharmacists as providers, and she believes that VSHP/DSHP and ASHP involvement is the perfect conduit to make this change. In her free time, Dr. Deal spends time with her family travelling and spending time at the beach.

Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education. This program is approved for 1 hour (0.1 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit. Proof of participation will be posted to your NABP CPE profile within 4 to 6 weeks to participants who have successfully completed the post-test. Participants must participate in the entire presentation and complete the course evaluation to receive continuing pharmacy education credit.
