Position Statement

Subject: THE CONTENT AND DESIGN OF A PROGRAM OF CONTINUING EDUCATION AS A REQUIREMENT FOR RE-LICENSURE

Background:

A program of continuing education as a requirement for re-licensure should be flexible in design, equitable in application, reasonable to administrate, and yet structured enough to serve its purpose.

Position

The Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists views the following considerations as key to the successful implementation of a program of continuing education as a requirement for re-licensure:

  1. The minimum number of hours of C.E. required is consistent with national average.
  2. A mixture of live presentation and other approved sources of C.E. is allowed and delineated.
  3. Reasonable guidelines for C.E. program approval are adopted so that high quality C.E. programs from multiple program providers may be accessible to practitioners.
  4. Provisions for exemption/extension periods are made for special cases that may be applied on an individual basis.
  5. Provisions for re-entry if a practitioner lets his/her license lapse and for practitioners reciprocating from other states.
  6. Provisions are made to maximize the cost-effective administration of the program by the Board of Pharmacy.
