New Lobbying Team Hired

Picture
After the retirement of VSHP's previous lobbyist, a new group of lobbyists has been hired to represent VSHP's interests with the General Assembly and the Board of Pharmacy.

A biography of the team can be found here.

Legislative Information

Picture
VSHP tracks all pharmacy-related legislation that comes before the general assembly and VSHP leaders meet via conference call each week that the General Assembly is in session to review and discuss the implications of all pharmacy and hospital-related legislation. On any given piece of legislation, VSHP will take a position to "support", "oppose", "monitor" or "amend." The discussion over each piece of legislation as well as the position taken helps VSHP's lobbyist seek the position that VSHP has chosen.

Lobbying at the General Assembly

In order to make progress as a profession, there must be progress both legislatively and with board regulations. VSHP's political action committee (PAC) and VSHP's members have organized in the past to update the laws of the state, and each year there is additional work with the General Assembly.

Current Bills of Interest to Health-Systems can be found here.

Recent legislative topics include:
Working to ensure hospital pharmacists retain representation on the Board of Pharmacy
Updates to expiration dates on repackaged medications
Improvements to Collaborative Practice Agreements between Pharmacists and Physicians
Decreases in paperwork requirements for delivery of controlled substances to nursing units

In order to get involved, consider which of the following might be of interest:
  • Contacting the current PAC committee chair and asking what current needs are
  • Writing to or calling representatives in regards to the news received from the VSHP PAC, above
  • Attending Lobby Day, held during the General Assembly (usually in February), in Richmond
  • Joining the VSHP PAC, or making a contribution
