2015 Lobby Day
VSHP has hosted its first Drug Take-Back event of 2015! In collaboration with the Capitol Police Department and the VCU Police Department, the event was held on VSHP’s Legislative Day, February 3rd, 2015! VSHP members and student pharmacists spent the morning educating legislators, legislative staff, and members of the public on safe medication disposal methods, while helping participants get rid of unwanted medications.
Over 110 different types of medications were collected at this event, including seven types of controlled substances. Medications of interest collected included drugs from foreign countries such as France, and medications with expiration dates harking back to the 1980s. Many people stopped by the table to ask questions and learn more about safe medication disposal.
Opportunities such as a drug take-back event provides a great forum for pharmacists to educate the public about safe medication storage and disposal to keep unwanted medications away from children and those who may want to abuse them. It is also another great opportunity to help protect our environment from contamination through proper medication disposal.
We look forward to hosting another successful event at next year’s VSHP’s Legislative Day!
